Join us in Bochum: Postdoc and PhD positions in Cognitive Neuroscience on Predictive Cognition

Do you want to join us? Our research focuses on identifying the neural mechanisms that integrate sensory signals and prior expectations in cognition. We aim to understand how humans adapt to changing contexts, learn from experiences, and generalize prior knowledge to new sensory inputs under uncertainty. To explore these questions, we combine computational modeling based on deep neural nets and large language models with behavioral and neuroimaging techniques, including eye tracking, pupillometry, EEG, and structural and functional MRI (s/fMRI). Predictive processing, particularly predictive coding, offers a potential framework for understanding adaptive behavior. By testing these theories against alternative models in areas like learning, perception, and memory, we aim to uncover the neuro-computational mechanisms underlying human cognition, specifically in speech and face perception. Informal inquiries are very welcome.

Location

The positions will be based at THINK, the Center for Theoretical and Integrative Neuroscience and Cognitive Science at the Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany.

What we offer:

  • Opportunity to get hands-on supervision for learning various data acquisition and analysis techniques (e.g., representational similarity analysis (RSA))
  • Dynamic, interdisciplinary, and international research environment
  • Research-dedicated T3 MR scanner, eye-tracking and EEG laboratories, excellent infrastructure for behavioural testing + access to T7 MR scanner!
  • Multiple training opportunities within the institute and the university

Requirements for the PhD position:

  • A Master of Science or an equivalent degree in neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, or a related discipline
  • Experience in programming (e.g., Python, MATLAB)
  • Keen interest in experimental approaches to study predictive processing including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Motivation to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Fluency in English

Additional requirements for the Postdoc position:

PhD in neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, or a related discipline

Application:

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Salary depends on experience and is based on German regulations (for PhD positions with a factor 75%). The starting date is flexible, ideally in summer 2025. The group is committed to Open Science and to maintaining a diverse and inclusive environment.

If you are interested in joining us, there are a number of excellent funding opportunities that you may want to check out.
